Hudson River Museum Presents Lens on the Hudson: Photographs by Joseph Squillante

From the official press release:

“The Hudson River Museum is proud to present Lens on the
Hudson: Photographs by Joseph Squillante, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of
photographer Joseph Squillante capturing the Hudson River’s magnificence, producing
thousands of evocative photographs that offer a lens into the past and present of this historic
waterway. The exhibition will be on view from May 9–October 19, 2025.

This exhibition highlights Squillante’s intersection with the environmental movements that
gained momentum along the river in the 1970s and continue today. As protests escalated
against industrial development that scarred the shoreline and polluted the waters of the
Hudson River, he grounded his work in visual storytelling—illustrating both the river’s
splendor and the efforts to protect it. He has sailed aboard the Clearwater sloop,
photographed singer-activist Pete Seeger, documented the PCB dredging operations, and
chronicled eagle banding and monitoring programs that contributed to the species’
resurgence in the mid-Hudson Valley.”

Related event: Artist Talk: Through the Lens of Joseph Squillante
Saturday, June 21, 2pm
Join photographer Joseph Squillante for an intimate walk through Lens on the Hudson:
Photographs by Joseph Squillante. With passion, humor, and insight, Joseph shares the
stories behind the photographs—moments of discovery, beauty, and awakening captured
over decades along the river’s banks, reflecting on the river’s enduring power as both muse
and mirror. You are invited to see with new eyes, to feel the heartbeat of the Hudson, and to
recognize our shared responsibility to protect it.

Hours and Admission: The Hudson River Museum is open to the public Wednesday–
Friday, from 12–5pm, and Saturday–Sunday, from 11am–5pm. On Free First Fridays, the
Museum is open and free of charge on the first Friday of the month, from 5–8pm. Learn more
and purchase tickets at hrm.org/visit.

Why Should I Join a Brain Trust?
One of the main reasons people join ASMP is for community and for support with the challenges of working as a professional photographer. ASMPNY’s Brain Trust groups provide a structure for this type of connection and information. At the moment there are 11 Brain Trust groups meeting under the auspices of ASMPNY.

What Is a Brain Trust?
It’s a peer group within ASMPNY for feedback, answers and support. Photographers meet on a regular basis to share information and help each other with their careers. The regular get- togethers provide an opportunity to learn and have questions answered, as well as help provide connections to a broader community of photographers.

What Is The Big Brain Meeting?
An overview of how ASMPNY’s Brain Trust program works, an opportunity to bring a real-life issue to the group, and an opportunity to join a group. At this introductory meeting, as an example of what might come up in a typical Brain Trust group, we will explore a specific issue of concern. If you have a question you would like to ask relating to the art or business of photography please bring it along.

Issues to consider include:
Contracts, copyright, negotiating, pricing, marketing, working with assistants, finding affordable and reliable resources, and staying on track with goals. At the end of the evening anyone attending will have the opportunity to join a Brain Trust group.

To Learn more or to join a Brain Trust:

Check our monthly Calendar for the next Big Brain event

or

Email us here.

TIME: Social hour 6:45 – 7pm // Event 7-9pm

This is a members only event. Free to members.

ASMP will be at Art Santa Fe and our exhibition will be selected by a world renowned panel of jurors, Leonar Fernandes from Fotonostrum, Jennifer Schlesinger; Obscura Gallery and Sidney S. Monroe & Michelle A. Monroe; Monroe Gallery of Photography meet them below!

Leonar Fernandes; Fotonostrum

FotoNostrum is on a mission to increase society’s comprehension and admiration of photography, recognizing its ever-evolving significance in contemporary culture. Our goal is to champion emerging artists by cultivating audiences, fostering dialogues within the photographic community, and  encouraging discussions between photographers and the public. We aim to ignite curiosity about photography through various mediums, including publications and exhibitions, both within our vibrant space in Barcelona and at external venues like prestigious art fairs.

Jennifer Schlesinger; Obscura Gallery

Jennifer Schlesinger is founder and director of Obscura Gallery in Sante Fe, New Mexico. Obscura specializes in photography, with an emphasis on contemporary artists alongside an inventory of 19th to 20th century works. Each represented artist, ranging from 19th-21st century photographers, offers a unique approach to the medium with special attention emphasized on the fine print. Obscura Gallery celebrates the ways in which contemporary artists are using progressive processes to build upon the medium which began nearly 200 years ago.
Schlesinger previously served as Director of Santa Fe’s Verve Gallery of Photography for eleven years. A passionate photography dealer, scholar, and artist in the medium herself, Jennifer and Obscura Gallery can also offer guidance on collection management, database inventory, consulting and advising, as well as estate representation, appraisals, research, de-accession and consignments. Jennifer is Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) compliant through January 31, 2026.
In 2024, Obscura Gallery moved to the bustling Canyon Road arts district of Santa Fe at the intersection of Canyon Road and Delgado Street.

Sidney S. Monroe & Michelle A. Monroe; Monroe Gallery of Photography

Celebrating 22 years in Santa Fe in 2024, Monroe Gallery of Photography specializes in 20th– and 21st-century photojournalism and humanist imagery—images that are embedded in our collective consciousness and which form a shared visual heritage for human society. Many of these photographs not only moved the public at the time of their publication but maintain the power to stir the consciousness (and conscience) today. They set social and political changes in motion, transforming the way we live and think—in a shared medium that is a singular intersectionality of art and journalism.
Monroe Gallery of Photography is owned and staffed exclusively by Sidney S. Monroe and Michelle A. Monroe. Sidney and Michelle maintain extensive personal connections with important photographers, clients, collectors, dealers, estates, auction houses, and archives worldwide. They have consulted with photographers, estates, and archives to curate and organize programs and exhibitions, and advise private collectors, museums, and corporations, with an emphasis on building collections with a variety of prudent focuses. Sidney and Michelle are also regularly invited to speak to photography workshops and seminars, as well as to college and high school student groups. Together, they have more than 50 years of curatorial and academic experience, and are acknowledged experts on the life and work of a number of famed photographers, including LIFE Magazine photojournalists Margaret Bourke-White, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Bill Eppridge, Bob Gomel, and Carl Mydans.
Although many record prices have been set recently, it is exciting to note that, on the whole, photography is among the most affordable of the fine arts. We invite you to view some of the best work in this indispensably vital field at Monroe Gallery of Photography. “I think some of the greatest photojournalism contains information that we were never meant to see”   In the Gallery with Sid and Michelle Monroe

ASMPNY Skillshare is a new line of programming for sharing knowledge – members supporting other members with their ideas and talents. The COVID-19 pandemic has thrust us into a new world, and ASMPNY is finding creative ways for us to stay ahead of the curve, as well as ways for us to directly and indirectly support our members.

ASMPNY will facilitate online zoom classes taught by our members, for our members, on topics of interest to us right now. (for example, product lighting, lightroom, post-production, graphic design, website building, how to use zoom, etc.) Let us know what YOU want to learn!

How it will work:

  • ASMPNY will facilitate a live zoom class lead by one of our members
  • Up to 100 members can attend the live class (and attendance is free!)
  • Classes will be recorded for those unable to attend the live class (also will be free!)
  • The member teaching the class will receive an honorarium for their time & expertise

ASMPNY Skillshare is designed to support our membership by sharing important and necessary skills that we all need right now, and will directly support our individual members teaching each class.

We are looking for two things:

1 – People who have skills that are valuable right now.

  • If you would like to teach a class, please reply here and let us know.

2 – What do you want to learn?

  • Please reply here and let us know what skills you need right now.

We are looking to begin this program right away.
