The start of the new year marked another change in our chapter leadership.

After 2 years of dedicated service, John Benford stepped down as American Society of Media’s New England Chapter President. Inspired by the Standells classic, Dirty Water, this exhibit is an ode to the grit and glamour of this city, and a reflection of the ways in which Boston has evolved – for better or worse – over the last two decades.

From our Juror, Edward Boches

How does an artist represent the City of Boston? There are always the usual suspects. Water colors of the Public Gardens. Night photos of the Zakim Bridge. Proverbial sketches of Chinatown or the North End. So it was exciting to see so many unexpected approaches to celebrating the grit and glamour of Boston in the Cambridge Art Association’s call, “Love that Dirty Water.”

Some images discovered emotion and power in the small details that define Boston’s character. Ty Muto’s ceramic space saver – a chair adorned with a Bruin’s logo sitting next to the Virgin Mary – manages to touch on everything from the challenges of street parking to sports and religion. Ricky Vasan’s painting “Aftermath,”  revealed the serenity of a typical, tiny Boston backyard sandwiched between the abutting houses, a space that probably doesn’t get much attention until an artist picks up his brush.

Other works showed us some of the old Boston. Steve Jacobson’s perfectly framed and multi-layered image of a smokestack, for example, harkens back to a time before tech and the life sciences took over the city.

Numerous paintings, photographs and digital works evoked feelings of nostalgia as they showed us long lost corner coffee shops, wooden-platformed MBTA stations, or abstract views of Olmstead’s parks.

I was pleased to see that other artists sought to provoke us with thoughtful work about development. And finally, what would a show about Boston’s grit be if it neglected to include a perspective on graffiti?

We live in a city that offers us endless subjects and scenes around which to create art. And we’re obviously surrounded by artists who make the most of it.

It was an honor to jury “Love that Dirty Water.” Thank you to the Cambridge Art Association and to the many artists who entered. Your work inspires me to look even deeper at the city I love.

Help develop and scan more than 3,000 rolls of film and preserve a personal vision of rock history in America – som

We are asking for your help to develop and scan more than 3,000 rolls of film and preserve a personal vision of rock history in America – sometimes sensitive and intimate, sometimes raucous and playful – seen through the eyes of master photographer Charles Daniels over 50 years.

Some of you know may Charles (aka Charlie) as an accomplished Somerville, Massachusetts photographer who shows up with his camera when something beautiful and a bit mysterious is unfolding: dancers in a parking lot, a festival of fire in Union Square, a hidden rave under McGrath Highway.

But as you get to know him better, crazy stories come out. Because Charles is also the Master Blaster, a legendary MC who danced on stage with his tambourine through the turbulent 60s, when international bands and local rockers tore up the Boston Tea Party in the South End. As the Master Blaster, Charles was Peter Wolf’s 3 a.m. sidekick on WBCN, Boston’s revolutionary radio station. In the 70s, he toured the US with some of the most famous musicians in rock history, hanging out and horsing around, hitting hotel pools and green rooms from the Las Vegas strip to the middle of nowhere. And where he went, so did his camera.

The Olympics are the largest sporting event in the world. They are a nation without a country, and every four years they need to convince some place to give them asylum. During ancient times, warring countries would call truce for the Olympics. Supposedly a nonpartisan event, it inevitable has always involved politics.

As a young boy, like many kids, I often dreamed I would compete in the Olympics. But my only connection with the Games was watching on television. The images were seared into my psyche. I committed times and events to memory. I read everything I could get my hands on about training and technique. I ran around my neighborhood and jumped over things in my backyard. During my high school and college years I competed in various track and field events. Once I even competed in an Olympic trial. That was a disaster.

As a photographer, I have covered the Olympics for over twenty years, both winter and summer games. A bizarre set of circumstances provided me with my first client in 1984. Los Angeles was the perfect introduction. That Games spoke the same language and ate the same food I did. It was in my comfort zone. On that world stage I also learned about nationalism. Whole contingents would wave their unfamiliar flags and shout unintelligible slogans, when all that was necessary was to create an audience for the poetry of athletes performing at the height of human capability. I observed media: publications, newspapers and television almost always missed the point. Sports of this magnitude and quality needed no personality, no politics, no hype. The individual who crossed the finish line winning gold is only marginally better prepared than the one who comes in last. Media just had to point their magnifying glass in the general direction and hang on. There are stories in nearly every triumph and tragedy. The Olympics are made for photography.

The body of work represents the longest work-in-progress I have undertaken. Over the years the rules have changed. The technology has evolved. Security has gotten tighter. At first I photographed with just energy and chutzpah. With time, in order to get better pictures, we have to plan and organize years in advance. My assistants & I train just like the athletes: weightlifting, jogging, running stairs, learning to take pictures at extreme weather conditions. That way, I finally got to the Olympics of my childhood.

The Games have been merchandised by media giants over the last several years and have marginalized the original concept, however the Olympics showcase the limits of human effort and endurance, the beauty and rhythm of movement, the grace of endeavor, and the myriad of nationalities: every race, gender and color on earth. I have never had special access. I buy a ticket like everybody else. I just never sit in the seat I purchased.

Area schools are interested in landing internships for their students and have asked ASMP New England for any interested members. We’d like to gather a list of members interested in having an intern. Possible interns will reach out to photographers they are most interested in interning with.

Please answer the following questions and send to Mike Ritter (mike@ritterbin.com) so we can share with prospective schools and interns:

• Please describe your experience.
• Where is your studio / office?
• What will an internship with you entail?
• Ideally students work on a mix of shooting, post production and marketing / social media.
• Can students expect to earn anything from assisting on your jobs?
